We all know the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words.” But how many words is your picture really saying on social media platforms, specifically the forever growing Instagram? Anyone can take a picture, and just about everyone can see it. You have no choice but to step up your picture game if you want to get your point across about your business these days.
How do you succeed in doing this in three to four seconds?
Remember who your target audience is. If you are a restaurant posting your newest menu item, you want your food to be appealing. Take a realistic approach to your photography.
Do not go over-board with filters that change the color of the food. Keep in mind the angle, and what your consumer will be seeing. You want to show your audience exactly what your restaurant is serving, and exactly what they will be eating.
Some businesses have more of a variety of choices with what pictures they can post. For example, a hotel can post a picture of cozy bed, with fresh sheets and bright lighting. This sends an inviting message that everyone can enjoy and relate to. If a hotel posts a picture of a bed that is slightly slept in, with candles lit, in a dark room, a different message is being sent.
It is a bit more suggestive, and limits your audience and the guests you are inviting to stay with you. Your “words” are more specific, perhaps even more graphic. I am not saying there is a right or wrong way to take and post your picture. I am simply saying you are being more selective about your audience by using specific “words” in your picture.
You want to engage your audience in your pictures. You want to spark their curiosity and answer any questions they may have about your business. If anyone comments on the photo, make sure to always respond. Sometimes it is not all about creativity, but simply making a brief and powerful statement.
