Twitter is toying with the idea of creating a feature that allows users to not only follow their favorite influencer, artist, or content creator but gain exclusive access to their content through a monthly subscription service provided by Twitter. It will be almost like Patreon in the sense that people can pay a monthly fee for more content from smaller known creators and influencers and in turn receive new updates, announcements, and sometimes merchandise and giveaway access ahead of other followers.
This new feature would allow users a more intimate look into their favorite creators’ and influencers’ lives and while this may be a fun concept it does seem like something that many people might be hesitant to buy into. Especially, in a time when people might be struggling financially and cutting back a bit with things that they might not need at the moment.
These influencers will be tasked with creating original content much more than they already are in addition will have to find new and unique ways to keep these followers engaged more so than other followers in order to keep them paying a monthly fee. The fee, which is in talks to be $4.99 a month is hearty for something such as tweets. In comparison, some online video streaming services, such as Apple TV and Discovery Plus are currently charging that for a monthly subscription. To pay that much, monthly per influencer you’re subscribing to seems a bit risky.
While the concept is interesting for now, Twitter, as it stands, offers up a unique model and already has a large dedicated group of users.
